Forum on Contemporary Theory

A Member of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes

Fosters interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue through conceptual and theoretical tools

About FCT

The Forum on Contemporary Theory fosters an interdisciplinary community of teachers, researchers and students committed to critical thinking in the humanities and social sciences in India and South Asia. We are an independent, autonomous, not-for-profit organization engaging in academic and scholarly activities with close to a thousand life-members. Located outside the university system, FCT nurtures a wide network of scholars and students nationally and globally.

History

The Forum on Contemporary Theory (FCT) emerged out of a conversation among a group of teachers and students at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Baroda, spearheaded by Prof. Prafulla Kar. Anchored in humanities and social sciences disciplines and focusing on ideas, concepts and theories, the ongoing conversation led to the creation of a platform for exchanges among teachers and students. The academic exchanges soon extended beyond MSU to include scholars from other universities in India and abroad. In the nearly three decades since then, FCT has grown through several stages of development, from informal collective into an internationally recognized institution. FCT is now an established platform, located in the global south for creation and exchange of new ideas in the field of humanities and social sciences.

Journals

The Forum on Contemporary Theory has been publishing the Journal of Contemporary Thought (JCT), an international peer-reviewed journal since 1991; it comes out twice a year, in summer and winter.

The Journal engages with or advances theory and critical inquiry in the humanities by providing a forum for scholarly dialogue on a broad range of topics significant to our time and cultures. Its focus is interdisciplinary, with preference given to studies of cultural criticism, intellectual history, and present-day issues. It considers textual studies for publication when they are placed in a broad conceptual framework.

The Journal has long had an editorial committee and an advisory committee consisting of eminent scholars in the humanities and social sciences from India and abroad. Its publication has, in the past, been supported by periodic grants from the International Lincoln Center at Louisiana State University in Shreveport (USA); the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi and the University of North Texas at Denton (USA). On a hiatus since 2017, the Journal returns in 2024.
